Al-Ghashiyah (The Overwhelming)
Translation
Verses 1-26
بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ (1)
Has there come to you the story of the overwhelming (event)?
[Al Quran ; 88:1]
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ (2)
Faces will be, on that day, humbled.
[Al Quran ; 88:2]
عَامِلَةٌ نَاصِبَةٌ (3)
Labouring, exhausted.
[Al Quran ; 88:3]
تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً (4)
Reaching a hot fire.
[Al Quran ; 88:4]
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ آنِيَةٍ (5)
They are made to drink from a boiling spring.
[Al Quran ; 88:5]
لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِيعٍ (6)
There will be for them no food except from thorn.
[Al Quran ; 88:6]
لَا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِنْ جُوعٍ (7)
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.
[Al Quran ; 88:7]
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاعِمَةٌ (8)
Faces will be, on that day, delighted.
[Al Quran ; 88:8]
لِسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ (9)
With their effort pleased.
[Al Quran ; 88:9]
فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ (10)
In an elevated garden.
[Al Quran ; 88:10]
لَا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً (11)
They will not hear therein vain talk.
[Al Quran ; 88:11]
فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ (12)
Therein is a flowing spring.
[Al Quran ; 88:12]
فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَرْفُوعَةٌ (13)
Therein are raised couches.
[Al Quran ; 88:13]
وَأَكْوَابٌ مَوْضُوعَةٌ (14)
And cups put in place.
[Al Quran ; 88:14]
وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ (15)
And cushions lined up.
[Al Quran ; 88:15]
وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ (16)
And carpets spread around.
[Al Quran ; 88:16]
أَفَلَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ (17)
Then do they not look at the camels, how they are created?
[Al Quran ; 88:17]
وَإِلَى السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ (18)
And at the sky, how it is raised?
[Al Quran ; 88:18]
وَإِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ (19)
And at the mountains, how they are erected?
[Al Quran ; 88:19]
وَإِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ (20)
And at the earth, how it is surfaced?
[Al Quran ; 88:20]
فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌ (21)
So remind, for you are only a reminder.
[Al Quran ; 88:21]
لَسْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمُصَيْطِرٍ (22)
You are not over them controlling.
[Al Quran ; 88:22]
إِلَّا مَنْ تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ (23)
Except whoever turns away and disbelieves.
[Al Quran ; 88:23]
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللَّهُ الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ (24)
Then Allah will castigate him with the greatest torture.
[Al Quran ; 88:24]
إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ (25)
Indeed, to Us is their return.
[Al Quran ; 88:25]
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ (26)
Then indeed, upon Us is their reckoning.
[Al Quran ; 88:26]
